Joel Porter Joel Porter was one of the founders of BankTennessee, which was established in 1992. He also served as president of Cumberland Bancorp located in Middle Tennessee and chairman of the board of directors executive committee for Civitas BankGroup, the former parent company of BankTennessee. In order to allow BankTennessee to retain its local ownership and community focus, Joel led a local group of investors in 2004 to purchase BankTennessee from its holding company.

A partner in his law firm Burch, Porter & Johnson , he served as the firm’s Chairman from 2001 until he retired from that position in 2007. A recipient of numerous honors throughout his career, Joel was named to Best Lawyers® in America list for 25 years and to the MidSouth Super Lawyers. He was a member, board of directors for the Memphis Bar Association 1971-1974; treasurer, 1986; secretary, 1987; president-elect, 1988; and president, 1989. Joel is also a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, Tennessee Bar Foundation and Memphis Bar Foundation.
